Shakespeare and the Canon
LIZBETH GOODMAN, W.R. OWENS, SIMON ELIOT, ROGER DAY, RUTH HAZEL, KATE CLARKE, RUTH HAZELShakespeare and the Canon explores the complex processes by which
certain writings, and not others, achieve a high cultural status, and
examines why the very concept of the canon is now being challenged.
The authors provide detailed study of four of Shakespeare’s best-known
plays — Henry V, Othello, Julius Caesar and As You Like It. No previous
knowledge of Shakespeare is assumed: the reader is offered practical
exercises in analysing key passages of text and criticism, and particular
attention is paid to the plays’ performance histories.
