Following in the footsteps of Rueben Job's excellent book, Three Simple Rules (and the related volume, Three Simple Questions), Five Simple Marks captures another of John Wesley's seminal methods in a format that is inviting, accessible, and formative for Christian identity. As you will know, Job's Three Simple Rules focused on the prudential means of grace as found in The General Rules, which Wesley published in 1743. The proposed book (manuscript in hand) makes use of the five identifiers that Wesley sets forth in "The Character of a Methodist," which he published in 1742. This volume is similar in size, substance, and layout to Three Simple Rules. Audience: In 12,000 words, by making use of Wesley's document, the new book would be aimed through leaders who are replicating authentic and balanced Christians disciples. This is consistent with Wesley's intention. In "The Character of a Methodist," he clearly stated that he did not want to distinguish Methodism from any "real Christian of whatsoever denomination." At the same time, Wesley knew that if the Methodist movement was to be established and grow, it must rest upon the solid foundation of gospel characteristics. The new book provides a focused strengthening of the world Wesleyan family, while written so that any Christian person or group could use it with blessing and benefit. (Introduction) Character Mark #1: A Disciple Loves God Mark #2: A Disciple Rejoices in God Mark #3: A Disciple Gives Thanks Mark #3: A Disciple Prays Constantly Mark #5: A Disciple Loves Others (Conclusion) On Your Marks Benefits Five clear characteristic practices for anyone who identifies as a Christian A primer for leaders who are making disciples and forming Christians in God's image Translates Wesley's language into current plain English Each mark concludes with a direct correlation to a Wesley hymn Priced and bound for gifting Includes questions for a five or six week study on Christian character "Steve Harper goes to the very heart of faithfulness as he describes and then calls upon all those who follow Wesley to live. It is lives of integrity that are the result of following these marks. Harper rightly says this will give the ring of truth to our daily living. He then goes on to identify the "Marks" or "Practices" that when followed will result in a life of righteousness, goodness, peace and joy. It is a way of living in God's gracious presence that he encourages for everyone and it is a way of living I choose for myself." Rueben P. Job
